In homestay accommodation, the host treats the student as a full member of the household, eating together and sharing the common living areas; no more than three other students (or other paying guests) will be accommodated in homestay accommodation at any one time.

Homestay is a popular option for students who want to speak English with their host and have wider access to British culture.  There will be additional opportunities to learn and speak English in the home. All student who are under 18 must stay in Homestay accommodation.

We carefully place each of our students with a homestay host that we believe is the right match for them, and because our hosts are warm, friendly and welcoming, our students find the experience to be enjoyable and rewarding.

What you can expect from your host:

✔ A warm welcome and the opportunity to practise English with them each day.
✔ You will be treated as a family member, eating together and sharing common living areas.
✔ Individual private bedroom with desk, and storage for clothes
✔ Bed linen changed weekly.
✔ Weekly laundry service, or he/she will show you how to use laundry facilities.
✔ Bedroom will be cleaned once per week.
✔ Daily access to a shower
✔ Wi-Fi at no extra cost (please check with your host about any data usage limits in the home)
✔ Shared or private bathroom (depending on what you have requested at the time of booking)
with daily access to a bath or shower.
✔ Breakfast and a well-balanced evening meal each day, with special diet catered for (e.g. halal,
gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian) if this has been requested in advance.
✔ Light lunch at weekends if required.
✔ Your own house key.
✔ Phone number of your host so you can communicate together easily.

Student Residence Accommodation

Staying at a student residence means you can immerse yourself into the famous Manchester student life and enjoy independent living during your studies.  You will live in a secure and safe environment, surrounded by other students (both British and international students). To make it easy for students to book accommodation, we don’t require a deposit to book any of our private accommodation. However, you are still liable for any damage caused to the property.

The Essential English Centre does not own its accommodation. We choose accommodation providers carefully and only work with providers who meet our quality expectations. Accommodation is inspected regularly by our accommodation team.

Accommodation Rules

Homestay rules

• Be friendly, polite and respectful. You may be asked to leave your homestay accommodation if you do not follow this rule. It is important to remember you are staying as a guest in someone’s home and it is not a hotel.
• Communicate any foods which you do not eat
• Tell your host if you do not need an evening meal or if you will be late for a meal
• Give your phone number while in the UK.
• If you are under 18, you must return home by 23.00 (11.30 pm) every night.  Your host will contact your parents or our school emergency phone number if you are not home by this time.
• Keep your host informed of your activities outside of class times, including what time you will be home each day.
• Keep your bedroom tidy
• Clean up after use in the kitchen, and to keep the bathroom area clean and dry
• Other guests can not stay in the home unless this has been agreed with the host and the school in advance
• Lock the house door when leaving the house (if you are the last person to leave)
• Return the house key at the end of your stay.  If the key is lost, a payment of £10 per key should be made to the host to replace it.
• To follow any other house rules as requested by your host.
• Take care not to break or damage any household items belonging to your host.  You will need to pay a fee if anything is broken or damaged. 

Student residence rules

•   The residence cleaner does not clean your private bedroom or bathroom. Please keep this clean.
• Please clean up after yourself in the kitchen and keep the area tidy.  Wash your dishes and clean any space that you have used after cooking.
• Please keep the kitchen fridge and your kitchen cupboards clean at all times.
• Please do not have guests to stay in your room overnight
• Please be respectful of other students in the residence by not making noise after 22.00 at night or before 07.00 in the morning.
• If you cause damage to your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, or any area or item of the residence, you will need to pay for this damage.
• If you lose your key / key card, you need to pay for a replacement.
• Keep your bedroom door locked when you are not there. You are responsible for your bedroom and your belongings.
• If you wish to change or cancel your residence accommodation after your check-in date, it will not be possible to give a refund.
• The school Accommodation Officer will require one week’s notice if you wish to change your accommodation after your check-in date.
• If you endanger any students or staff of the residence in any way, you will be asked to leave the residence and you will not receive a refund for the remainder of your stay.
• If you do not follow the rules, you may be asked to leave the residence and you will not receive a refund for the remainder of your stay.
