Course Overview

Students will join the Cambridge C1 Advanced specific exam module focusing on specific exam content and techniques.

The exam preparation will include skills development in the different task types in the four areas of the exam. You will also focus on topics, vocabulary, grammar and real-time exam practice.

Students are expected to have the necessary English level to take part in this class. Those who need to improve their overall English level should join the Cambridge C1 First exam (full-time) course as there will not be a focus on improving the overall level of English in this class.

What topics will you cover?

Vocabulary – idioms, collocations, shades of meaning, phrasal verbs, fixed phrases etc.
Reading for detail, opinion, tone, purpose, main idea, implication, attitude.
Understanding and comparing opinions and attitudes across texts.
How to understand the structure and development of a text.
Reading for specific information, detail, opinion and attitude.
Developing points as fully as possible in order to demonstrate a range of structures, vocabulary and language functions, such as evaluating, expressing opinions, hypothesising, justifying, persuading.
Writing the different types of text that could be included in the exam.
Listening for feeling, attitude, speaker purpose, opinion, purpose, function, agreement, course of action, gist, detail, etc.
Listening for specific information, stated opinion.
Listening for main points and interpreting context.
Giving information about yourself and expressing your opinion about various topics.
Talking on your own about something: comparing, describing, expressing opinions, speculating.
Exchanging ideas, expressing and justifying opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing, suggesting, speculating, evaluating, reaching a decision through negotiation, etc.
Expressing and justifying opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing.

FAQs

How will you test my level?

Before joining the Cambridge exam preparation course, we will need to understand more about your current level of English. We may ask you to take a level assessment before you arrive, or provide us with information about your previous English language studies.

On your first day at school, you will also take a level assessment with one of our teachers. Your level will then be discussed with you and information about your class and start time will be given to you.

How many weeks should I study for?

Before you start your Cambridge exam preparation course, we will discuss your current language level and experience with Cambridge exam material/tests. We will then guide you on how many weeks we think you should study for.

Students can study from 1 week up to 44 weeks. The recommended number of weeks will depend on your language goals and available time. We recommend that students study for 12 weeks (full-time) in order to improve by one full level. Your progress also depends on the amount of time you practise outside of your lessons, including minimising the use of your first language.

How many people will be in my class?

New students can join the school each week and the average number of students in the class ranges from 5-12. The maximum number of students we will allow in a class in 14.

How will you monitor my progress?

Our academic team wants to ensure you are making the best possible progress during your course. This is extremely important to us.

We do regular progress tests and record all results, to make sure we can track your improvement. You will also have an individual tutorial with your teacher every four weeks. If you are on a longer course, you will also have a tutorial with the Director of Studies every twelve weeks.

Our method of continual assessment means we can give you detailed updates on your progress at any stage during your course.
