Travelling around Manchester
Travelling in Manchester is easy! Manchester’s public transport system is excellent, with bus, rail and tram networks operating very frequently and at reasonable costs. The Essential English Centre is located in the city centre (Portland Street), which makes it very easy to travel to school and home again every day. If you are studying with us for a longer period of time, consider buying monthly, or longer-term bus, train or tram travel passes to benefit from lower prices.

General travel information
All of Manchester is served by a very frequent and well-run bus service, with most routes running all throughout the day and often into the night also. The bus is one of the cheaper ways to travel in Manchester, and also one of the most convenient. Some buses stop directly opposite the school, with other stops just a few minutes’ walking distance.
Depending on where you live, the train may be quicker for you to travel into Manchester and back. Generally slightly more expensive than the bus, although still reasonably priced, the train is a comfortable and efficient way to travel. With The Essential English Centre within easy walking distance of Manchester Piccadilly, Oxford Street and Victoria train stations (5 – 10 minutes on foot depending on the station), it is quick and easy to get to school by train.
The tram is also a popular way of travelling around Manchester. Metrolink runs the tram service in the city, with routes to Altrincham, Eccles, Bury, Rochdale, East Didsbury and Ashton-under-Lyne, as well as a service to the Trafford Centre and Salford Quays. The nearest station to The Essential English Centre is St Peter’s Square, just three minutes’ walk away.
