Our General English courses are designed for motivated students who wish to develop their overall English skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as grammar. We believe that in order to improve your language to its best potential, all of these areas are important, with the principal goal being good communication ability.
Each day, you will work towards different objectives, meaning you can track your progress on a daily basis. At the end of each week (usually every Friday), you will spend part of the lesson taking a progress-check assessment. This will give you the opportunity to recognise the areas where you are doing well and those where you would benefit from further study. Your teacher will also offer feedback following the test and will be available to answer any specific questions.
We use the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) to measure student progress. It takes about 180 – 200 learning hours with a teacher to move from one level of English to the next level. So, to complete one level of English, you can expect to study 12 weeks. It is important to remember that this is a general guide, and that your level of progress will depend on many factors, for example your language learning background and the amount of time you can practise English outside class.
On the General English 15 hour course, you will work from a coursebook as well as other materials given to you by your teacher, and you will learn and practise English skills in reading, writing, listening and grammar with a lot of time for speaking and pronunciation practice. You will study as part of a group with students who are at the same/similar level to you and classes are designed to be fun and interactive.
Students who choose our 25-hour General English programme will study in the General English 15 hour course in the morning and will then return to classes in the afternoon to study on our ‘Language for Life programme’.
Language for Life classes are designed to be fun and interesting while helping you to become more confident with using English in real life situations. In these sessions you will learn new vocabulary and phrases, practise real life situations, make presentations and visit local places of interest to practise the English you have learnt in the lesson. Your teacher will use a range of materials during the lesson and the main focus is on speaking, listening, pronunciation and using language in a real-life context.
